How to rank in ChatGPT, in one sentence: let OpenAI’s search crawler in, rank well in regular search, and publish pages that answer specific buyer questions so clearly that an AI can quote them. There’s no paid placement and no secret prompt. When ChatGPT searches the web, it picks sources that are reachable, relevant to the exact question, and trustworthy enough to cite. Your job is to be all three.

The rest of this guide explains the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO, how assistants actually pick sources, ten concrete steps, and how to measure progress without fooling yourself.

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what’s the difference?

Three acronyms, one overlapping job.

SEO AEO GEO
Full name Search engine optimization Answer engine optimization Generative engine optimization
Goal Rank and earn clicks in search results Be the direct answer (snippets, voice, AI answers) Be cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers
Main surfaces Google, Bing Featured snippets, voice assistants, AI overviews ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude
Success signal Rankings, organic traffic, leads Answer ownership Mentions, citations, AI referrals
Core work Technical health, content, links Question-led content, clear answers, structured data Everything in SEO and AEO, plus brand presence across the web

In practice, AEO and GEO are SEO with a different finish line. If your SEO is weak, GEO tactics won’t save you, because AI assistants that search the web start from search results. If your SEO is decent, AEO and GEO are mostly about format, specificity and reputation.

How AI assistants choose sources

It helps to separate two modes.

Answers from training data. When an assistant answers without searching, it relies on what it learned during training. You can’t edit that directly. What you can do is be consistently described across the web (your site, directories, reviews, industry media, forums) so that the picture models learn is accurate.

Answers with live search. When ChatGPT searches, OpenAI’s documentation says it uses third-party search providers and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find and link to pages. OpenAI also states that sites that block OAI-SearchBot won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still show as navigational links. That control is separate from GPTBot, which collects training data: you can allow one and block the other.

From there, the assistant reads candidate pages and builds an answer. Nobody outside the AI companies knows the exact ranking logic, and anyone claiming precise weights is guessing. What’s consistently observable: assistants favor pages that answer the specific question directly, are easy to parse, and come from sources that look credible on that topic.

10 steps to get cited by ChatGPT

1. Let the right crawlers in

Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall bot settings. Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. Decide separately whether to allow GPTBot (training). Do the same review for other assistants’ crawlers. A surprising number of sites block AI crawlers by accident through a security default.

2. Get indexed by Bing as well as Google

Many teams only watch Google Search Console. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix what it flags. If the search layer behind an assistant can’t find your page, the assistant won’t either.

3. Fix technical basics

Fast pages, clean HTML, content rendered without heavy client-side JavaScript, no broken canonical tags, no accidental noindex. Crawlers that fetch pages live have little patience.

4. Map the questions your buyers actually ask

Start from sales calls, support tickets, keyword research and “People also ask.” Write them as full questions: “How much does CNC machining cost per part?” beats “CNC pricing.” These are the prompts people type into ChatGPT.

5. Answer first, then explain

Put a two- or three-sentence direct answer at the top of the page, then the detail. This article does exactly that. An assistant looking for a quotable passage will find it; a human skimming will too.

6. Be specific and verifiable

Name standards, materials, locations, timelines, and the sources behind any number. Vague pages (“we deliver quality solutions”) give a model nothing to cite. Never invent statistics; it’s a trust problem with people and machines alike.

7. Structure for extraction

Clear H2 and H3 headings phrased as questions or topics, short paragraphs, comparison tables, numbered steps, and FAQ sections. Add schema markup (Organization, Article, FAQ, Product or Service where it fits) so your entity and page purpose are unambiguous.

8. Make your entity consistent everywhere

Same company name, description, address and categories on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, industry directories and review sites. Assistants cross-check. Inconsistent information makes you a riskier source to recommend.

9. Earn mentions where AI looks

Being mentioned on credible third-party pages (industry publications, comparison articles, association listings, podcasts, relevant forum discussions) matters for both classic SEO and AI answers. Aim for genuine mentions; spammy placements age badly.

10. Keep pages fresh

Update key pages when prices, regulations or products change, and show the updated date. For time-sensitive questions, assistants tend to prefer current sources.

How to measure AI visibility

There’s no “ChatGPT Search Console” that shows impressions for every prompt. Measure with a mix:

  • Prompt panel. Build a list of 20 to 50 real buyer questions. Every month, run them in ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Log: mentioned or not, cited with a link or not, which competitors appear, and whether the description of your company is accurate. Answers vary between runs, so look at trends, not single results.
  • Referral traffic. In your analytics, look for sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar. ChatGPT links commonly carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. Group these sources into one “AI assistants” segment so you can see the trend.
  • Leads, not just clicks. Add “How did you hear about us?” to your forms with an “AI assistant (ChatGPT, etc.)” option. AI-driven visitors often arrive later via a brand search, so self-reported source catches what analytics misses.
  • Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Rising impressions for long question-style queries usually move together with AI visibility.
  • Tools. Several AI visibility trackers now automate the prompt panel. Useful at scale; not required to start.

What not to waste money on

  • “Guaranteed ChatGPT ranking” offers. Nobody controls the model’s output.
  • Mass-produced AI articles with no new information. They don’t give an assistant a reason to cite you over the original source.
  • An llms.txt file as your whole strategy. It’s cheap to add, but it doesn’t replace crawlability, content and reputation.
  • Chasing every new acronym. If the plan doesn’t improve your pages, your technical health or your reputation, it’s theater.

FAQ

Questions merchants ask

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

There is no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's organic answers. Visibility comes from being crawlable, being found by the search systems ChatGPT uses, and being a clear, trusted source on the question asked.

How does ChatGPT choose which websites to cite?

When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers and its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. It then picks pages that answer the specific question clearly and appear trustworthy. Pages blocked from OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO aims for rankings and clicks in search engines. AEO, answer engine optimization, aims to be the direct answer in featured snippets, voice and AI answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, aims to be cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers. They overlap heavily.

How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my company?

Run a fixed list of real buyer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot every month and log whether you are mentioned or cited. Check analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com and other AI assistants. Dedicated tracking tools exist, but a spreadsheet works to start.
