If you’re comparing ChatGPT Team vs Enterprise, start with the name: OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025. The short version: Business suits small and mid-size teams that need a secure shared workspace; Enterprise adds the identity, compliance and data-location controls larger organizations need; and the API is for building AI into your own processes rather than giving people a chat window.

Both business tiers keep your data out of model training by default. So the real decision is less about privacy and more about admin controls, scale and where your team already works. That’s also why Microsoft 365 Copilot and Claude for Work belong on the same shortlist.

Plan names have changed, so check before you buy

OpenAI has reshaped its business lineup several times. “Team” became “Business” in August 2025, and OpenAI’s help center describes that as a name change only, with features, pricing and limits unchanged at the time. Pricing then changed during 2026: news reports in April 2026 said OpenAI cut the Business seat price and added pay-as-you-go seat options for its coding tool. Seat types and limits keep evolving.

Practical advice: treat any blog comparison (including this one) as a map, and confirm current plan names, seat prices and limits on OpenAI’s business pricing page before you sign.

Data and privacy: closer than people think

OpenAI states that by default it does not use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu or the API platform to train its models, and that organizations own their data. It also lists encryption at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2 or higher). The API platform allows organizations to opt in to sharing data, but the default is off.

So if your only worry is “will OpenAI train on our contracts?”, both Business and Enterprise answer no. The question that should decide your tier is the next one.

Admin and compliance: where Enterprise earns its price

Enterprise makes sense when you need to:

  • Provision and remove users automatically from your identity provider (SCIM), instead of managing seats by hand
  • Keep data in a specific region, which matters for some EU and public-sector buyers
  • Control encryption keys through your own key management system
  • Set custom data retention and granular admin roles
  • Negotiate a contract with procurement, legal review and dedicated support

If none of those are on your security team’s list, Business is usually enough. If several are, Business will create admin work that costs more than the seat difference.

API: not a plan, a building block

The API is a different product. Nobody “logs in” to it; your software calls it. You pay per million tokens, with rates depending on the model (see OpenAI’s API pricing page for current figures). Use it when you want to:

  • Process documents, emails or tickets automatically
  • Build a customer-facing agent or an internal tool
  • Connect AI to your CRM, ERP or helpdesk

Many companies need both: Business seats for staff, plus API usage for one or two automated workflows. The cost logic for the API side is in AI implementation cost in 2026.

The alternatives: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Claude for Work

Microsoft 365 Copilot Claude Team / Enterprise ChatGPT Business / Enterprise
Lives inside Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint Claude apps, with connectors to work tools ChatGPT apps, with connectors to work tools
Strongest when Your company runs on Microsoft 365 Long documents, writing, coding Broad general-purpose use, large ecosystem of features
Trains on your data by default No (Microsoft states prompts and responses aren’t used to train foundation models) No (per Anthropic’s pricing page) No (per OpenAI’s business data page)
Public list price Business: $21/user/month for under 300 users (Microsoft, Dec 2025), as an add-on to Microsoft 365 Team standard seat: $20/seat/month annual, $25 monthly (Anthropic’s pricing page, Oct 2026) Check OpenAI’s pricing page; changed in 2026
Enterprise tier Microsoft 365 Copilot for larger organizations, via Microsoft or a reseller Enterprise: seat fee plus usage billed at API rates, per Anthropic’s pricing page Enterprise via OpenAI sales

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Copilot’s advantage is context. It works inside the Microsoft 365 apps and can draw on the emails, files, chats and meetings your users already have access to. For a company that runs on Outlook and Teams, that’s hard to beat. The trade-off: it’s an add-on to a Microsoft 365 subscription, and results depend heavily on how tidy your SharePoint and permissions are. If everyone can see everything in SharePoint, Copilot can surface it too. Fix permissions first. Training helps a lot here; see Microsoft Copilot training for teams.

Claude for Work (Team and Enterprise)

Anthropic’s business plans are Claude Team (for teams of 2 to 150, per its pricing page) and Claude Enterprise. Team offers standard and premium seats you can mix. Enterprise adds role-based access, SCIM, audit logs, a compliance API and custom data retention, and bills usage at API rates on top of the seat fee. Claude is a strong choice for teams that work with long documents, contracts and code.

Which one should your company pick?

Your situation Start with
5–50 people, mixed tools, want a secure shared assistant ChatGPT Business or Claude Team
Company runs on Outlook, Teams and SharePoint Microsoft 365 Copilot (after a permissions cleanup)
300+ users, SSO/SCIM required, regulated data ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude Enterprise or Copilot enterprise licensing
You want to automate a workflow, not give people a chat API (OpenAI or Anthropic) plus an automation layer
Not sure yet Pilot two tools with one team for a month, then decide

Honest note: the tool matters less than the rollout. A company with Business seats, a one-page data policy and a training session will get more value than one with Enterprise seats nobody was taught to use. In the EU, Article 4 of the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) has required deployers to take measures to ensure staff AI literacy since 2 February 2025, so training is not optional anyway. This is not legal advice. Our 6-step AI implementation plan covers the full sequence.

Five questions to answer before you buy seats

Most buying mistakes come from skipping the boring questions. Answer these first and the right tier usually becomes obvious.

  1. Who actually needs a seat? Start with the people whose tasks you’ve mapped, not the whole org chart. Unused seats are the most common waste in AI budgets.
  2. What does your security team require? Ask them for the list before you talk to vendors. If SCIM, data residency or customer-managed keys are on it, you can skip the self-serve tiers.
  3. Where does the data your team needs live? If it’s mostly in Microsoft 365, Copilot has a head start. If it’s spread across Google Workspace, a CRM and a helpdesk, compare the connectors each vendor offers for your specific tools.
  4. Do you need a chat assistant, an automation, or both? Seats help people work faster. The API automates work nobody should be doing by hand. Budgeting one when you need the other is a classic mismatch.
  5. Who owns the rollout? Someone has to write the data policy, set up the workspace, run training and check usage after a month. Without an owner, even the right tool ends up as an expensive bookmark.

One more practical tip: run a paid pilot on monthly billing with a small group before committing to annual seats. The annual discount is real, but so is the cost of a year of seats for a tool your team didn’t adopt.

FAQ

Questions merchants ask

Is ChatGPT Team still available?

Under a new name. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025. According to OpenAI's help center it was a name change only, and existing contracts stayed in effect.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Enterprise?

Both keep your data out of model training by default. Enterprise adds controls larger organizations need, such as SCIM user provisioning, data residency options, enterprise key management and more granular admin roles, and it is sold through OpenAI's sales team.

Does OpenAI train on ChatGPT Business data?

Not by default. OpenAI states that it does not use inputs or outputs from ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu or the API platform to train its models unless the organization explicitly opts in.

Should a company use ChatGPT or the OpenAI API?

Use ChatGPT seats when people need an assistant for writing, research and analysis. Use the API when you want to build AI into your own workflows, apps or agents, and pay per use instead of per person.

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot better than ChatGPT for companies?

It depends on where your work lives. If your team lives in Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel, Copilot's access to your Microsoft 365 data is a big advantage. If you need a strong standalone assistant across tools, ChatGPT Business or Claude Team may fit better.
