Most lists of the best Shopify apps have 30 entries, and half the apps on them paid to be there. Our list is shorter, because every app you install is a script on your storefront, a monthly line on your bill, and one more thing that can break after an update.

The short answer: start with Shopify’s own free apps, add one third-party app per real gap (usually reviews first), and only keep an app if you can name what it earned you last month. On a new store, that’s often fewer than eight apps.

We run six Shopify stores of our own, and we’ve watched what apps cost them in speed. Here’s the day-one list by category, the criteria we use to pick, and the apps we’d skip.

The rule: native first, then one app per gap

Shopify has quietly built free apps that cover jobs merchants used to pay for. They’re maintained by Shopify, they don’t charge per order, and they tend to integrate cleanly with the admin and checkout.

So our order of operations is:

  1. Can Shopify do it natively or with a free Shopify-made app? Use that.
  2. If not, which third-party app does exactly this job, with the least storefront code?
  3. Can we measure whether it’s working? If not, we don’t install it yet.

Search & Discovery: filters and “you may also like”

Search & Discovery handles filters, search synonyms, product boosts, and related and complementary product recommendations. It’s free. Reviews on the App Store are mixed, with some merchants reporting weaker search results recently, so test your top 20 search terms after installing. For most catalogs under a few thousand products, it’s still where we’d start before paying for a search app.

Shopify Flow: the app that replaces three other apps

Flow automates admin work: tag high-value customers, alert you when stock drops, hide sold-out products, route orders. Because it runs in the admin, not the storefront, it costs you zero page speed. That makes it the rare app we’d install on every store.

Translate & Adapt: fine for two languages, not for fourteen

Free, built into the admin, and good enough for manual edits. The limit is automatic translation: a maximum of two languages. Past that, you need a translation workflow. Our multi-language store guide covers how we handle 14 languages on one store.

Best review app for Shopify: what to look for

Reviews are usually the first third-party app a store needs. Shopify discontinued its own Product Reviews app in May 2024, so there’s no native option.

What we check before choosing a review app:

  • Built for Shopify badge. It means the app meets Shopify’s performance and integration standards, including limits on storefront speed impact.
  • Review markup Google can read, so star ratings can show in search results.
  • Photo and video reviews if your product is visual.
  • Import and export. You should be able to leave with your reviews.
  • A free or low-cost plan that fits your order volume.

One example that meets these: Judge.me has a free plan and the Built for Shopify badge. It’s not the only good option, and we’re not paid to mention it. Use the checklist, not the brand.

Best upsell app: start with what you already have

Before installing an upsell app, use what’s free:

  • Complementary products in Search & Discovery, shown on the product page.
  • Fixed bundles with Shopify Bundles.
  • Automatic discounts, including Buy X Get Y, built into Shopify.

If you still need more, such as in-cart offers or post-purchase one-click upsells, pick an app that does one of those well rather than an all-in-one that loads every feature on every page. Then measure average order value by month, before and after. If it doesn’t move, uninstall.

Best subscription app for Shopify: free first, then specialize

Shopify Subscriptions is free and covers recurring orders with discounts, plus skip, pause and cancel for customers. Its reviews are mixed, and stores with complex needs (build-a-box, loyalty tied to subscriptions, advanced dunning) often move to a specialist app.

Our rule: if your subscription is “the same product every month at a discount,” the free app is enough. If subscriptions are the business model, compare two or three specialist apps on their fees, how they handle failed payments, and how you’d migrate subscribers out.

How to choose any Shopify app: six criteria

Use this for every category, not just the ones above.

Criterion What to check
Storefront weight Does it load scripts on every page, or only where the feature shows?
Built for Shopify badge Performance and integration standards, reviewed by Shopify
Native alternative Can Shopify or a free Shopify app already do this?
Pricing model Flat fee, per order, or % of revenue? How does it scale?
Exit Can you export your data? Does uninstalling leave code in your theme?
Measurable job What number should change, and by when?

The Built for Shopify storefront rule is worth knowing: per Shopify’s requirements, an app must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points. That’s the ceiling for one app. A store with five storefront apps can pay it five times.

Shopify apps that slow down your store (and what we’d skip)

These are categories, not specific products, because the problem is the pattern:

  • Countdown timers and fake-urgency widgets. They add scripts and erode trust once buyers notice the timer resets.
  • Entry pop-ups on mobile. A newsletter pop-up covering the product in the first second costs more than the email is worth. If you need a sign-up form, Shopify Forms also does inline forms, and a footer form rarely hurts anyone.
  • “Speed booster” apps. An app that adds code to make your store faster should make you suspicious. Speed comes from removing things.
  • All-in-one “conversion suites.” Twelve features, eleven unused, all loading.
  • Duplicate trackers. Two apps sending the same pixel event double-count and double-load.

Lab note

In a single Lighthouse lab run on our own six stores, the lowest mobile score was 47, on mamawszoku.pl, which also logged 1.15 seconds of JavaScript blocking time. It’s our most feature-heavy store: Booksy booking, a jewelry set builder and gift vouchers on top of 1,229 products. Every feature earns its place there, but it’s a clear reminder that each one has a speed cost. The full numbers are in our speed optimization post.

An app audit you can do in 30 minutes

  1. Open Settings > Apps and sales channels and list every installed app.
  2. For each one, write what it’s for and what it costs per month.
  3. Mark apps nobody on your team can explain. Those go first.
  4. For the rest, check whether Shopify now does the job natively.
  5. Uninstall, then check your theme for leftover code and app embeds that stayed switched on.
  6. Re-run PageSpeed Insights on your product page and compare.

Most stores find at least one app they’re paying for and not using. Every app you remove means less code on the page and less to maintain.

The short list wins

The best Shopify apps are the ones that earn their place, and the stack is small: Shopify’s free apps for the basics, one good third-party app per real gap, and a monthly habit of asking what each one earned. Fewer apps means a faster store, fewer conflicts after updates, and a smaller bill. For how app choices show up in conversion, see our Shopify CRO guide.

If you’d rather not run the app audit yourself, our Care plans start at $390/mo with 4 hours of work included. We test app and theme updates on a duplicate theme, flag speed regressions monthly, and tell you which apps are worth their fee. Want a one-off check first? FAQ

Questions merchants ask

How many apps should a Shopify store have?

There's no right number, but every app should have a job you can name and a result you can measure. Many stores run well on a handful of apps, several of them free ones made by Shopify. If you can't say what an app earned you last month, it's a candidate for removal.

What is the best review app for Shopify?

There isn't one best app for every store. Shopify discontinued its own Product Reviews app in 2024, so you need a third-party app. Look for a free or low-cost plan that fits your volume, the Built for Shopify badge, Google-compatible review markup, and photo reviews if your product is visual. Judge.me is one widely used example with a free plan.

Is Shopify Subscriptions a good subscription app?

It's free, built by Shopify and covers the core: recurring orders with discounts, and letting customers skip, pause or cancel. Stores that need advanced bundles, loyalty or complex billing rules often choose a third-party subscription app instead. Start with the free one unless you already know you need more.

Do Shopify apps slow down my store?

Many do, because they load JavaScript and CSS on the storefront, sometimes on every page. Shopify's Built for Shopify requirements say an app must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points, so choosing apps with that badge limits the damage.

Are free Shopify apps safe to use?

Free apps made by Shopify, such as Search & Discovery, Flow, Forms, Bundles, Subscriptions and Translate & Adapt, are maintained by Shopify itself. For third-party free apps, check the developer, recent reviews, the permissions requested, and what happens to your data and theme code when you uninstall.
